One of the main reasons we don’t accept insurance for couples and family therapy is the specialized training our therapists have. Our therapists undergo extensive training in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and the Gottman Method, both of which are highly effective in helping couples and families heal and grow.
These methods are proven to work, but they require years of education, practice, and ongoing learning. When you come to us, you’re not seeing a generalist—you’re seeing a therapist who has invested deeply in learning how to help relationships thrive. This level of expertise comes at a cost, but it’s an investment in your relationship’s future.
Therapy with more than one person in the room is a lot more complex than individual therapy. It’s not just about helping one person; it’s about balancing multiple perspectives, emotions, and motivations. It takes skill to guide difficult conversations, manage conflict, and ensure that everyone feels heard.
Our therapists work hard to create a space where everyone feels safe to open up, and that takes a lot of preparation and emotional energy. This process requires extra care, time, and energy before and after the sessions to make sure the therapy is balanced and effective. It’s much more than just “talking it out”—it’s about carefully navigating and empowering each person to engage in a meaningful way.
Another reason we don’t accept insurance for couples and family therapy is that insurance companies typically require a mental health diagnosis for reimbursement. Unfortunately, relationship struggles like communication issues, conflict, or lack of intimacy don’t fall under any of the typical diagnosis codes that insurance companies use.
On top of that, insurance companies often audit therapy notes, and that means your private relationship struggles could end up in your medical records. That’s not something many people want—especially when it comes to such personal and sensitive matters. We believe your relationship issues should remain confidential, and we want to protect that privacy for you.
We know therapy can be a big investment, but we truly believe it’s one of the best things you can do for your relationship. While there are therapists who accept insurance, many don’t have the specialized training and skills needed to help you address the complex dynamics of a relationship.
At Wiser Counseling, we prioritize your relationship’s well-being by offering therapists who are trained to guide you through the tough stuff, in a way that works. Therapy isn’t just about fixing problems—it’s about building stronger, healthier relationships for the future. We’re here to walk with you every step of the way.
